How Should Cupertino Balance Its Budget Deficit?

We shared the results with the city council on 12/05/2023. Our written communication starts from page 8 here. You can see our presentation during oral communication here.

The results can be found here. The comments (edited by removing personal information) can be found here.

Many of you have probably heard by now that the City Of Cupertino has to pay back the California Tax Board approximately $57M for tax monies that were received from Apple for recorded sales in Cupertino which actually occurred elsewhere. The California State Tax Board has now retroactively awarded Apple sales taxes to the cities at the point of sale as of 2021 and Cupertino must return $57M to the State.

Additionally, Cupertino will no longer be receiving Apple sales tax distributions $30M per year which the city has counted on for income for years.

To balance the city’s new yearly budget shortfall, our city council has already reduced all city department budgets, reduced Capital Improvements/Public Works, and reduced some city services. In spite of this the city still expects to have a remaining yearly shortfall of $10M. Please see here for more details.
